:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Alyssa A -- A Book for/about Aspie's or a Thesis Paper/Scientific Journal Article on Asperger's?? : I have just started looking into Asperger's for myself and my husband. While this book has some good information, I found it hard to read at times. As someone who is reading this book because I may be an Aspie (or borderline Aspie), I had trouble understanding many of the sentences. I would have to read them a few times and even look up the words he was using. I felt like this book was written more like a thesis paper or for a scientific journal. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Great reader for understanding autism -- I know more about myself : As a lost diagnosis autism I have adapted the social rules two decades ago, however, I still have a feeling that I was not blended in to the social groups that well. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Excellent descriptions of autistic experiences! : to explain what being autistic is like when we (autistic adults) don't have as much ability as you do to deliver the details of autistic experiences. Thank you so much for writing the book. I feel like I somehow stopped asking simple questions I had every day by learning to adopt to PNT's social skills, but after reading your book, I feel more accepted in the way my mind is wired. Thank you again and this became one of my most favorite autism-related books! ( Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- The best book on Autism I have ever read! : I was privileged to hear Dr. Luke Beardon speak at Axia-ASD’s 2015 conference “Perspectives from the Spectrum” where he argued that “No one is a little bit Autistic” as his his primary premise. I say “primary premise” when perhaps I should say “an important concept which had a major impact on my paradigm”. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 8, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from The Includer -- Challenging myths and sterotypes about autism : This book is a must-read if you really want to understand autism and how misunderstandings and assumptions about autism by PNTs (predominant neurotypes) can make life difficult for autistic people. Hence autistic adults are disadvantaged not disabled. Dr Beardon covers a range of topics in adult life including employment, anxiety, relationships, masking, criminal justice system, sensory profile, parenting, academic study. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Would recommend to all. : As stated on the front cover this is clearly a very up to date overview of Autism and Asperger Syndrome. Although the title at the beginning says ‘in adults’, this book is pertinent to children, teenagers and their families. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 2, 2017 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from JAL -- Frustrating : I found this book quite exasperating. Despite all his researches, the author specifically refuses to define autism because, he tells us, it can vary so much. He also refuses to accept there is an "autistic spectrum" - someone is either autistic or not autistic. In fact, from his examples, he is clearly talking about people who are only mildly autistic. We are told that autism is not a disability, but simply means "differently-abled". Nonetheless he describes situations where we should make allowances for their odd social behaviour or reactions. This is difficult since with no definition of how to recognise autism we have no guidance on how to distinguish someone who, for example, seems rude and quarrelsome because they can't help it from someone who really does want to quarrel. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from T. G. Valentine -- Describes what it's really like to have Asperger's : I have Asperger's myself. It was identified when I was in my early teens. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 8, 2020 )
